How does tinnitus affect the understanding of speech?

Speech understanding in noise

People who suffer from tinnitus often report having problems understanding speech in a noisy environment. Several studies have already confirmed that this is particularly difficult for people with tinnitus. A noisy environment is an everyday occurrence for most people.
Whether in a restaurant or on the street, background noises make it difficult to understand spoken language, especially with increasing age and hearing loss.
In a current study, we are applying electroencephalography (EEG) as well as hearing and behavioral tests to find out to what extent various factors such as tinnitus, hearing loss and cognition (e.g. attentiveness) are involved and how they interact in understanding spoken language.
